Xandros CoreOS Alpha 1 Released

Today the Xandros Development Team is pleased to announce the release of Xandros CoreOS. Xandros CoreOS is our new version of Xandros that is built for small businesses and our education customers.

Xandros CoreOS is a complete command line focused Linux system that removes a lot of overhead that is provided by traditional desktop environments. Xandros CoreOS 2023.07 while not a desktop system can be best described as a utility OS. This makes it ideal for users who want to deploy the following services:

• Media Server
• File Server
• Web Server
• Research and Education
• Container OS
• Intranet Server
• Utility System

With Xandros CoreOS 2023.07 you have two install options.  You have the normal install which does include a windowing environment, i3, and contains the following features

• Epiphany Web Browser
• Visual Studios Code
• Document Viewer
• OpenSSH Client and Server
• Cockpit Remote administration
• Linux Kernel 6.2
• Htop
• Nmon
• Powershell 7.3.6
• .NET 7
• GCC
• Clang Compiler Suite
• GNU Midnight Commander
• Ranger File Manager

With the minimal install it takes out all the GUI components.  With the minimal install you have:

• Linux kernel 6.2
• OpenSSH Server and Client
• Cockpit Remote Administration
• Bash and Powershell
• .NET 7
• GCC
• Clang Compiler Suite
• GNU Midnight Commander
• Ranger file manager

As this is an early Alpha build we do not recommend that you deploy this in any kind of production environment.

Xandros CoreOS will be free to download, use and redistribute but with the finished product you will be able to add Xandros CoreOS to your support subscription.

New ISO's available

A few users had reported that they had some issues with Xandros Community Edition 2023.07 downloads.  We went ahead an updated the ISO and have tested it thoroughly and its now available here:

With that we did run a few updates.

• Linux Kernel 6.2 is now available
• GNOME Text Editor 
• Google Chrome 115

We also applied all security updates to the system.  Xandros Enterprise Linux 2023.07 customers have new ISO's available to them as well.  New USB keys will be sent out on Monday. If a customer would rather have a digital download contact your account manager or the sales team.

Xandros Enterprise Linux 2023.07 Released

Today the Xandros team is pleased to announce the release of our leading enterprise desktop Linux distribution, Xandros Enterprise Linux 2023.07.  This release is an update to our line of quality desktop solutions.  In this release we have made many improvements to functionality, security and device support.

• Inclusion of GNOME Classic session for customers who need a lighter desktop experience or those who dont like the modern GNOME experience

Xandros Community Edition 2023.07 Released

Today the Xandros team is pleased to announce the updated release of our community edition.  Xandros Community Edition is free to download, free to use, and free to redistribute.  It is a subset of our Xandros Enterprise Linux product.  This release comes with no formal support and users can find help, tips and tricks through our online forums.  

One of the questions we get about Xandros Community Edition vs Freespire which is our other free operating system that we offer.  Some of the differences are:

• Freespire tries to stay as close to the definition of free software as possible.  Meaning we try to limit the use of proprietary code and drivers.  Xandros Community Edition does contain proprietary code and drivers
• New releases of Freespire are released every 6 months.  Xandros Community Edition follows the same update schedule as Xandros Enterprise Linux.  Minor updates and security fixes every 3 months and new releases every 12 to 14 months.
• Freespire is self support only.  PC/OpenSystems LLC customers can add installed instances of Xandros Community Edition to their support contracts.
• Freespire uses GNOME with an option for the i3 Window Manager.  Xandros Community Edition uses GNOME with GNOME Classic in the base install

Launch of the new website

 Today the PC/OpenSystems LLC team is pleased to announce the new website for Xandros Enterprise Linux.  With the launch of this new website we will provide all news, downloads and community discussion for Xandros Enterprise Linux, one of the leading Enterprise desktop Linux distributions available.

While we continue our transition some links and downloads are not yet operational but Xandros Community Edition and the webstore are active and available.
